What is Mount Carmel?
Mount Carmel is a year-round Bible Study and renewal center. It’s also referred to as a family/adult camp. It is a Christ-centered community for all ages where the gospel is experienced. The high season of our intergenerational programming is from mid-May through mid-October. The rest of the year we host retreats for churches, individuals/families and Christian organizations, plus offer programs of our own.
What is the Daily Texts?
Daily Texts is a devotional book we produce annually for use in congregations, groups and by individuals. It began over 270 years ago as a result of a unique interaction between Moravian refugees living on the estate of a Lutheran layman. Our version combines Martin Luther’s prayer pattern, the TRIP, with the verses that are used world wide in 50 languages. We read and share the verses daily year-round with our staff and guests as we grow together with Christ in the Word.
What is a Proclaimer?
Proclaimers are friends of the ministry that donate $200 or more to our Annual Fund in a calendar year. (The Annual Fund is our General or Operating Fund.) In 2007 there were 499 families, individuals, churches and organizations who were Proclaimers. Their dollar support totaled over $355,000.
How does Mount Carmel receive income?
We receive funds from four sources:
1. Guest fees from users of Mount Carmel
2. donations from guests and friends
3. sales from Daily Texts and related products
4. grants from matching funds with Thrivent Financial and other sources
How long has Mount Carmel been around?
Mount Carmel was founded in 1938 by Samuel Miller, president of the Lutheran Bible Institute of Minneapolis. It was created as the permanent site for the summer ministry of LBI which had been using other sites since 1921. It is a space set apart for teaching and renewal in God’s Word.
Is Mount Carmel affiliated with a church or denomination?
Mount Carmel is listed as an outdoor ministry in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America yearbook. Our Executive Director is a Lutheran pastor. We do not receive any funding from the ELCA, nor any directives for our programming. We are not owned by congregations as is the case with most youth camps.
Who comes to Mount Carmel?
We welcome all Christians as well as those seeking to learn more about God and Jesus the Christ. Our theology is grounded in the historic biblical Christian tradition with a strong emphasis on Martin Luther’s teaching on living under grace instead of under the law as found in St. Paul’s letter to the Romans and in other biblical writings.
How do you upgrade/replace buildings on your property?
We do this by having Capital Appeals for specific projects. Right now we are in Priority One of the Building Blessings appeal. The funds from this phase are designated to construct 8 new cabins, remodel 12 other cabins and build a new Chapel.
