Here and Now:  the call of immediacy in the Gospel of Mark

The opening words of the Gospel of Mark express the immediacy of the Gospel: "The beginning of the good news/gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God" (1:1). Without a main verb, these words draw us into the urgency of the entire Gospel. They express that whatever parable, miracle, teaching or narrative story in the life and ministry of Jesus, and in our reading or hearing of the Gospel of Mark, "the beginning of good news/gospel of Jesus Christ" breaks into our lives. The Gospel calls us to follow Jesus Christ as his disciples and witnesses to his crucifixion and resurrection. This is the promise that guides our study into the proclamation and living presence of the crucified and risen Christ in the Gospel of Mark.
