Luther on God's Earthly Rule · July 3–9, 2027
Contemporary Americans suffer much social and political polarization. We are ever tempted to believe that some formula of getting economics and education "right" could bring about utopia — heaven on earth. Christians too buy into these ideals, to the point of either politicizing the gospel or making politics into something saving. Teacher Mark Mattes leads us back to the scriptural view, voiced by Luther, that God rules his world with "two hands": the church through the gospel and the world through the law. Unlike the "false church," where politicians use religion for their own gain or religious leaders use politics for theirs, the true church honors this distinction and urges people to be engaged citizens by being true to their many callings.
A 2-Night Family Weekend · July 9–11, 2027
A short but full weekend of teaching, worship, and community — perfect for families who can't commit to a full week. Teacher Katie Koplin is a mental health counselor, writer, and co-host of the Freely Given podcast. She is the editor of Encouragement for Motherhood: Devotional Writings on the Work of Christ and holds a Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minnesota. Rooted in west central Minnesota, Katie finds joy in exploring the depths of grace through writing, counseling, and conversation alongside her husband Dallas and their four children.
A 4-Night Family Camp · July 12–16, 2027
How do we parent with grace and freedom rather than fear? And how do we engage with education and the news with discernment rather than anxiety? Teacher Kelsey Kramer McGinnis is a writer, musicologist, and educator based in Iowa, with a PhD from the University of Iowa. A regular contributor to Christianity Today, she writes on worship practices, the music industry, and church culture, and lectures at Grand View University in Des Moines. She is co-author of The Myth of Good Christian Parenting: How False Promises Failed a Generation of Evangelicals (Brazos Press, 2025). This week she leads teaching and discussion on grace and freedom for parenting, and on engaging education and the news with discernment instead of fear.
With Teacher Dan van Voorhis · July 17–23, 2027
Dan van Voorhis brings a historian's eye and a pastor's heart to the questions families and young adults are actually asking. Drawing on his deep expertise in church history, Dan reads the present moment through the long story of the church — and shows that today's hardest questions are rarely as new as they feel. Dan is known for adapting his teaching in real time to what's alive in the room, making each week genuinely unique. Dan van Voorhis holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of St. Andrews and spent 11 years teaching history and political thought at Concordia University, Irvine. He is Scholar-in-Residence at 1517 and the host of the daily podcast The Christian History Almanac.
An Invitation to Religious Spirituality · July 24–30, 2027
Perhaps you've heard someone describe themselves as "spiritual but not religious." And if you've spent much time in the church, you've met folks who are "religious but not spiritual." The invitation of Scripture is for an intimate spirituality with God — but that relationship is not meant to be divorced from Christ's church. Join teacher Gabe Kasper as we explore what this looks like together. Evening preacher Rev. Paul Muther has served as pastor at Our Savior Lutheran in Burlington, WI since 2021. He graduated from Concordia Wisconsin (BA '08, Biblical Languages) and Concordia Seminary (MDiv '12, STM '19, New Testament Exegesis and Homiletics), and previously served in Janesville, MN. He and his wife, Laura, have three boys — Benjamin, Amos, and Josiah — and he enjoys swimming, biking, running, and baking pizzas.
